Lawn mower trick will give you 'thick and healthy' grass and stop it growing 'sideways'

Many people try to avoid the chore of mowing the lawn, but garden expert Bo Petterson warns that common mistakes could be wasting their efforts.

Bo shared his top four tips for a perfect lawn on TikTok, where he’s known as @dadadvicefrombo. He started his video by saying how important it is to take care of your lawn.

Bo said: “In the spring, you need to mow a couple of times a week and you need to cut it short. This teaches your grass to grow outwards instead of upwards, making your lawn thicker.”

He added: “In the summer, you don’t have to mow as often, but you should leave the grass longer. This shades the roots from the hot sun.”

Bo’s next tip is to change the direction you mow each time you cut the grass. He explained: “This can include vertical, horizontal, cross pattern, wavy, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t do this, your lawn will learn to grow sideways like a combover.”

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) agrees with Bo’s advice, saying that this method stops ruts from forming in the lawn.

The gardener said if your grass looks like it has ripped ends, it means your lawn mower blades might be dull. “You need to sharpen them or change your blades,” he advised.

He suggests that you should sharpen or change your mower blades about once a year. Bo also said: “Inspect your grass every few months to look for ripped cuts, that will tell you it’s time.”

He also tells people to use the grass they cut as mulch and says: “The trick is you have to mow often and it helps if you really love your mower.”

People who saw his gardening tips were very happy. One person wrote: “I didn’t know about changing the pattern!” Someone else joked: “Realising I’ve never mowed a yard correctly in my life.”

Another person shared: “I wish I saw this years ago! I’ve always struggled with my lawn, I’m going to use all these tips.” And someone else learned something new: “I didn’t know that about cutting short in spring. Love learning new grass tips!!”
