Grass cutting season is coming to an end, but if you want your lawn to look perfect ahead of the winter months then there’s a simple task you may want to complete. Depending on how cold it is where you live, most people usually get their last lawn cuts in during early November, but you may want to put away the strimmer when you do so.
According to gardening guru Ish, known as gardening.with.ish online, you can get “perfectly crisp” lawn edges by using a household tool to get the job done. What it is may surprise you, as it’s a very unlikely tool to rely upon; however, according to Ish, it can offer brilliant results, especially if you’re on a budget.
If you’re looking to achieve super clean edges, you just need to get your hands on something that’s probably lying around the house. It comes after it was revealed you need to follow five steps to achieve a lovely autumn lawn.
Ish said: “Today in the garden, I’m going to show you how easy it is to get a nice clean edge on your lawn without a strimmer. Now, if you like the idea of a nice clean edge on your lawn, it couldn’t be any more simpler.
“You could just use a strimmer but, if you don’t have that in your budget right now, it’s even easier with nothing but a pair of scissors. Simply take your scissors and slide it across from the edging to the grass, and slowly snip across.”
He added: “You’ll feel it gliding along. Once you’ve made your cut along the edge, all you do is just push it away with your hands and there you go. A nice, super simple clean edge.
“It’s also a pretty effective way for edging against surfaces as well. Just simply place it sideways and snip along. Again, once you put that away, you can see that’s a much cleaner edge on your lawn.
“Now, the chances are, I’m going to get a lot of comments of people telling me ‘well, you should just buy a strimmer’. When you’ve got the time and the money, absolutely, but if you still want that clean line, and you’ve got a little bit of time, it’s pretty easy to do it with just a pair of scissors.”
Even though he admitted some people may find it easier to use a strimmer, other gardeners confessed to using scissors. Some seem to think it gives much better results.
One person replied: “I do this every time I cut the lawn.” Another added: “I do this quite often. It’s quite relaxing and satisfying.”
How to get perfect lawn edges
Little you may know, you can use a scissors to get perfect lawn edges, but it’s a time consuming method. Experts say it’s often best for small areas or touch-ups, as opposed to entire lawns, though some people will put in the effort and work on larger spaces.
For an efficient finish, especially for large or hard-to-reach areas, it’s often considered best to use long-handled edging shears, an electric trimmer with an edging mode or a manual half-moon edging tool to help define the line. However, there are people out there who use scissors.
On social media, one person admitted to using scissors, writing: “It gives a nice neat edge, I can’t abide strimmers. They strip everything in site and ruin the edge.”
Another added: “My mum always used to do this. Makes the edges look so nice.” A third also noted: “I use it and it’s so much easier.”
Ahead of the winter months, gardeners should stop cutting their grass when it stops growing. This normally happens during late October or early November when temperatures consistently drop below 10°C.
The final cut should be done at a shorter length to help prevent disease and damage during winter. It’s also wise to remove leaves too.
