As reported by the Daily Mail at the time, the source added: “Anne and Edward had been privately concerned about Andrew and wanted to check on him. But Charles’s view is that he should not be in the public eye. His Majesty was not thrilled at all.”

Amid the latest Epstein scandal, Prince Andrew revealed last week that he will relinquish his remaining titles and honours – including the Duke of York title.

In the statement, which was released by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said: “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.

“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life. With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

It has been reported that the King is “glad” that Andrew has relinquished his royal titles following discussions, which also reportedly heavily involved Prince William.

Although involved in discussion, William is understood to have not been satisfied with the outcome and knows the “Andrew problem” will be “in his in-tray at some point”. A source told The Times: “He will excluded from public and private royal events, including the coronation, and banned from most state occasions.”

Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also no longer be known as the Duchess of York. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will remain unaffected by their father’s decison.
