Kesha is opening up about a near-fatal health issue she experienced after freezing her eggs.
The singer-songwriter, 36, revealed in an interview with Self magazine published Tuesday that she “almost died in January” weeks after undergoing medical treatment to freeze her eggs.
Kesha did not share specifics, though the article notes she did share more details off-the-record and that it was an “uncommon yet serious complication from the fertility procedure.”
The magazine also noted Kesha spent nine days hospitalized in Miami as a result.
“I finally feel recovered, but it took a couple months,” she said. “It was horrifying.”
The singer also said she’s been hesitant to discuss the health issue publicly for fear it will be interpreted as a broader statement on pregnancy or reproductive agency.
“I just was taking my reproductive health into my own hands,” she said. “And I stand by everyone doing that and (honoring) your body.”
She added: “Everyone probably has some semblance of feeling like you share what you’re going through, and, at the same time, it’s almost inviting people to have an opinion about it. I don’t have that perfectly mapped out.”

Kesha also opened up to the magazine about getting diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called common variable immunodeficiency, or CVID, which puts her at higher risk of recurrent, potentially serious infections. According to Mayo Clinic, CVID also causes an increased risk in digestive disorders, autoimmune disorders, blood disorders and cancer. In the cast majority of CVID cases, its cause is unknown, Mayo Clinic says.
Kesha elaborated on why she hasn’t shared her CVID diagnosis publicly until now.
“I just never wanted to be the whiny, privileged girl,” she said. “Also, my image had been that of going out and having fun.”
