Japan's Crown Princess Kiko unable to eat 'normal meals' after contracting mystery illness

Crown Princess Kiko of Japan has been unable to eat “normal meals” after contracting an unknown disease, according to inside sources.

Japanese national newspaper The Mainchi reported on a statement from the Imperial Household Agency which said that the mother-of-two was initially struck down with the condition last year.

Doctors have ruled out COVID-19 as the cause of her complaint, as the Princess has tested negative for the virus and influenza, and medical professionals are still running tests.

However the royal still appeared to be in good spirits as she attended New Year celebrations and beamed in family portaits with her husband Crown Prince Akishino.

In a family photo session at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess posed alongside their children, Princess Kako, 29, and Prince Hisahito, 17.

Tsunami warnings were later issued following the quake, with the death toll later reported at 161 as aftershocks continued to rock the country, which is situated in an earthquake-prone area.

In 2011 an underwater megathrust earthquake in the Pacific Ocean led to a tsunami hitting the Japanese coast in the Tohoku region, causing nearly 20,000 deaths.

The natural disaster then triggered a nuclear incident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant after the tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling of three reactors.
