Residents on the island described hearing their doors and windows shake at 7.30pm on Monday, while other worried residents said the thought there had been a “large explosion” on the Scottish island, which is incredibly popular with tourists.

One local resident posted on social media: “Anyone else here on the Isle of Mull think we’ve had a couple of earth tremors this evening? Like a rumbling train in a tunnel and lasting for a good number of seconds.”

A second added: “We heard a weird bang and the glasses and plates in the dresser started rattling.”
