Michael Mosley's overnight oats recipe is one of his go-to weight loss breakfasts

Dr Michael Mosley’s Fast 800 diet is a flexible approach to weight loss with the “very fast” option taking a focus on rapid results.

Intermittent fasting supplements a low-carb Mediterranean-style diet which is restricted to 800 calories a day, but still includes flavoursome meals.

Michael claims that “the key to feeling satiated” while restricting calories is to consume foods that are moderately low-carb, rich in protein, fibre and healthy fats. And when it comes to breakfast, overnight oats are one of his favourite options.

The TV doctor participated in an “Ask Me Anything” forum on Mumsnet when he revealed: “The sort of things that I eat for breakfast, and which I believe are healthy, include: Porridge, with added nuts.

“Not the instant stuff, but rolled wholegrain oats with wheat bran. I buy supermarket own brand.”

He continued: “You can also make simple overnight oats.”

Making the breakfast dish is so easy to do and lends itself to endless flavour possibilities.

Michael said: “Put half a mug of oats in a bowl, cover with milk, leave overnight in the fridge, and then eat the next morning with your favourite topping.”

Overnight oats toppings

When it comes to choosing toppings, there’s an endless list of combinations. But to stick to the Mediterranean-style diet, raw, whole ingredients are a must.

  • Raw cacao powder, peanut butter and bananas
  • Cinnamon and apples
  • Blueberries, lemon, Greek yoghurt
  • Carrots, Greek yoghurt, honey and seeds
  • Mixed fruit and nuts

Those seeking a more savoury morning meal have plenty of other Michael Mosley-approved options.

He added: “Eggs. I love them scrambled, boiled or as an omelette. Plenty of healthy protein and very filling. The great thing about omelettes is you can experiment with lots of different fillings.

“You can find lots of omelette recipes (and more) at Dr Clare Bailey’s Instagram account. I am also a fan of kippers, which I particularly enjoy with fried tomatoes.”
