Iran nuclear sites mapped: Nine areas Israel could target in revenge attack

Israeli leaders have vowed a response to Iran’s weekend aerial attack, but an Iranian general said on Thursday that any strikes on Tehran’s atomic sites would result in even more conflict.

A senior Revolutionary Guards general threatened to target Israel’s “nuclear facilities” if it strikes Iran’s own nuclear sites, state media reported.

While Iran’s weekend strike was mostly intercepted and caused little damage, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that “Israel will do whatever is required to defend itself” as world leaders urge de-escalation in the region.

On Saturday, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel after an apparent Israeli strike killed two Iranian generals. Israel and Iran have waged a long shadow war, but the strike was Iran’s first direct military attack on Israel. Israel and its partners intercepted nearly all the missiles and drones.

But as Iran anticipates Israeli retaliation for the attack, there are specific nuclear sites Israel could target.

Possible targets include the Tehran Nuclear Research Center, the Arak Heavy Water Reactor, the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Bonab Research Center, the Esfahan Nuclear Technology Center, the Fordow Plant, the Natanz Enrichment Plant, the Parchin Military Complex, or the Arkadan Yellowcake Production Plant.

While Israeli officials have not said exactly when or where the country would retaliate, Ahmad Haghtalab, Iran’s Guards’ head of nuclear protection and security, said Tehran would “definitely” reciprocate any attack on nuclear sites.

Haghtalab said, as reported by official news agency IRNA: “If the Zionist regime (Israel) wants to take action against our nuclear centres and facilities, it will definitely and surely face our reaction.

“For the counterattack, the nuclear facilities of the (Israeli) regime will be targeted and operated upon with advanced weaponry.”

Haghtalab added that “the threat” of an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites could lead Tehran to “to revise and deviate from the declared nuclear policies and considerations.”

The majority of Iran’s nuclear facilities are located in the country’s center.

Haghtalab said that Iran has “identified” Israel’s nuclear centers and holds “necessary information of all targets.”

He said: “Hands are on the trigger to fire powerful missiles for the total destruction of determined targets.”

Iran has insisted that only “old weapons and minimal power” have been used in attacks on Israel so far, as the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Monday that Iran had closed its nuclear facilities “for security reasons” on the day of its strike on Israel.
