Inside Meghan Markle’s history with Jamaica – including wild wedding with booze and drugs

They began dating in 2004, and they tied the knot in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, seven years later. Their wild wedding party reportedly lasted four days, with guests enjoying beach games after drinking lots of rum punch.

A source claimed that the couple asked a hotel bellboy to buy marijuana for their 100 guests. The cannabis joints were reportedly handed out in muslin gift bags, which Meghan put together herself.

The Sun revealed an email Meghan reportedly sent to a friend before her wedding, after they helped the former actress pick the perfect gift bag. “Already ordered ’em. And teeny ones for the pot that say ‘ssh’,” the email read.

A source told The Sun: “Meghan thought it would make it memorable. She was excited about making that [the cannabis] a thing, showing a cheeky side people wouldn’t have imagined she had.”

At the time of the wedding, having marijuana was against the law in Jamaica. It’s now considered a minor offence with less serious consequences.

Sources said Meghan didn’t regularly use cannabis. In fact, she’s thought to have had a “conservative” view on drugs since her teenage years.

Meghan and Trevor split up in 2013 because of differences they couldn’t resolve. Their divorce was finalised in 2014, and Meghan then started dating Prince Harry.

Harry invited his then-girlfriend Meghan as his guest when he was an usher at his mate Tom Inskip’s wedding in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex turned the event into a romantic getaway just for them.

The wedding party was held at the Round Hill Resort, which has 110 acres of tropical gardens and its own private bay. Guests have included Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire, Emma Watson and John F Kennedy in the past.

Meghan and Harry enjoyed a stay in a swanky £5,000-a-night villa at a resort, complete with a housekeeper, two pools and a games room with a bar.

The Duchess of Sussex and former Suits star is a big fan of the Caribbean and revealed her favourite hotel, The Rockhouse, is in Negril, Jamaica. She shared on her former lifestyle blog The Tig that she feels a “special kind of calm” whenever she visits.

She described it as the “kind of spot that leaves you daydreaming about it long after you’ve returned to alarm clocks, rush hour traffic, and people asking how you’re doing but never listening for the answer”.

After just a few days in Negril, Meghan said she felt “After only a few days in Negril, I felt instantly renewed.”

The Rockhouse Hotel is a popular choice for celebrities like Rita Ora, Bella Hadid and Victoria’s Secret model Shanina Shaik. It’s located “off the beaten track” and offers rooms built from timber, stone and thatch, designed to blend with the surrounding landscape.

Prices are surprisingly affordable, with double rooms starting at just £150 per night and the grand Ocean Suite costing only £380 per night.

Meghan also wrote: “Before bed, a big piece of homemade coconut cream pie tucks you in for a perfect slumber on crisp white sheets and an ocean breeze lulling you to sleep.”
