'I'm suing my parents over my university fees – but my family hates me'

A woman has said she is suing her parents over her university money but has said her family hates her over the argument.

The woman, who lives in the USA, thought she was lucky because she had money saved for school, but now she is “suing her parents” to get her college money back.

She thought she had more than $13,000 (£10,110) ready for university, but when she checked at the bank, she found out it was “almost all gone”, she shared on Reddit. The woman said that her great-aunt made savings accounts for all the girls in the family. When she died, they were allowed to use the money, reports The Mirror.

The woman who wrote on Reddit said: “In our culture education for women is not really valued and she thought that was b******t. She lived with her father in London where she was educated. She went on to attend university and became a doctor

“She married a British man, they moved to America and had a great life. She funded the education of as many of her nieces and grand nieces as she could. When she passed away she left money for every girl relative she could.”

But her parents managed to access the accounts that were set up for her and her sister, and “used it to pay for my brother’s wedding”.

The woman added: “My sister didn’t care because she got married two years out of high school and had no intention of going to college. When I graduated I went to the bank to get money for school and it was almost all gone.”

She confronted her parents after discovering a significant amount of the money was missing and they told her they “needed the money”. The incident has completely altered her relationship with her family.

She commented: “I finally found out where the money went. I got furious. I got student loans and moved out. I am a great source of shame to them and I don’t give two f***s.”

The furious daughter is now “suing” her parents for the money that was left for her, but it has left her “entire family against her”. She continued: “They all think I am a complete a*****e for airing private family business in public and that I am putting money ahead of family.

“My brother called me up and offered to pay for my university if I drop the lawsuit. I agreed as long as we had a legally binding contract. I said he should not have accepted my money for his wedding. It is causing all kinds of embarrassment in our community. I am somewhat ashamed to be doing this but I don’t want to have this debt I should not have.”

Lots of people on Reddit supported the woman. One person wrote: “Your parents didn’t borrow your money. They stole it. I hope you have all the documents to show that money was yours.”

Someone else said: “Let it become a criminal matter. They committed a crime. They stole from you. They should all be ashamed.”

And another person commented: “Well, it seems that your family have already made up their minds about you. You need to do what you need to do to get that money back (whatever it takes).

“And keep reminding yourself that you don’t need people like that in your life, regardless of relation. Your aunt took control and paved her way through that culture. You are doing the same. Good luck.”
