I'm a physio – this is how Princess Kate's recovery from surgery is likely to be going

With careful “listening to limits”, determination and “dedicated physiotherapy”, Princess Kate could return to her favourite pastimes like tennis, as soon as April, one expert has said. Orthopaedic and sports physical therapist Andrew Nasr, believes Princess Kate will make a return to sports in a “reasonably quick” and “safe timeframe”.

The sports expert who also focuses on skeletal muscles during recovery said: “By eight to 12 weeks post-op, with dedicated physio and careful listening to limits, Kate could potentially return to her favourite pastimes like tennis or hiking, as long as she eases back in gradually.”

In a statement released by Kensington Palace last month, Princess Kate was admitted to the hospital on January 16 for planned abdominal surgery.

Physical therapist, Mr Nasr, believes the type of surgery Kate will have had, will impact her recovery time, and if she progresses well, her doctors might “gradually start to increase activity levels and distances walked”.

He said: “Considering Kate’s young age and excellent prior health, I expect her recovery will be on the faster end of guidance.”

The Princess of Wales is known to be incredibly sporty, enjoying tennis and running in particular. The royal has shown her athletic ability various times over the past 12 years, trying her hand at several different sports from cricket to volleyball.

Mr Nasr added: “Over the first four weeks post-op, Kate will likely be avoiding high-impact activities and limiting herself to gentle walks close to home. Low-impact options like swimming may be introduced sooner if she’s feeling up to it and her doctor gives the go-ahead.”

During the early phase of the Princess of Wales’s recovery, this will include “light movement to prevent stiffness while letting internal tissues heal”.

Princess Kate underwent a 13-night stay at The London Clinic after her planned surgery before returning to the Windsor Estate to rest.

In what appears to be a marked improvement in Princess Kate’s condition, she left Windsor alongside her husband and three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, for a half-term holiday on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

A source told the MailOnline: “Catherine is recovering well. She was looking forward to a change of scene and will be able to take it easy in Norfolk while the children let off steam with William.”

A Kensington Palace spokesman revealed on January 17 that “based on the current medical advice”, it was unlikely that the Princess, 42, would return to royal duties until after Easter.

Prince William briefly stepped back from royal duties while Princess Kate recovers from her operation, to help look after her and their three children.

He has since returned to and conducted planned royal engagements including a high-profile charity gala event in aid of London’s Air Ambulance.
