‘I’m a heating expert – easy-to-install £5 radiator foil can slash your energy bills'

With winter well and truly underway and energy bills still sky high, Brits are struggling to heat their homes in an effective and affordable way.

During the cold winter weather it can be incredibly expensive to leave the heating on for large periods, and easily fixable issues might mean that the heat is escaping your home.

Catherine Storer is a heating specialist at ESS and she has shared some useful advice on how to heat your home more effectively – without turning up your thermostat or keeping your radiators running for a long time.

Effectiveness of radiator reflector foil

“Radiator reflector foil reflects up to 95 percent of the heat into the room rather than letting the walls absorb it. This material is more effective at redirecting heat than standard kitchen foil.

“Its reflective surface is designed to withstand the continuous heat output from radiators, ensuring durability and long-term effectiveness. You can find them online for as cheap as £5.”

Catherine believes that the value of reflectors can’t be emphasised enough: “Radiator reflectors are not only cost-effective but also compatible with different heating systems. They are particularly beneficial in rooms with solid walls, reflecting heat back into the room and thereby improving warmth.

“However, their benefits are not limited to these scenarios; they are also effective in rooms with insulated or cavity walls.”

Comparison with DIY solutions

While it may be tempting to use DIY solutions such as kitchen foil, they are not as effective as commercial radiator reflectors. Kitchen foil lacks the necessary thickness and specialised design needed to optimise heat reflection.

Therefore, investing in dedicated heat reflectors or ready-to-use radiator panels will be better for not just energy conservation, but will significantly reduce your heating bills.

Ease of installation

Unlike other more technical hacks, radiator reflector foils are incredibly simple, as Catherine explains: “The installation of radiator reflectors is straightforward – it’s as easy as placing them behind your radiators.

“Once installed, they require no further attention, seamlessly integrating into your home’s heating system.”

Even heat distribution

Another significant advantage of the affordable radiator reflectors is their ability to enhance a room’s ability to evenly distribute heat.

“The primary benefit we see with radiator reflectors is the improved and even spread of heat,” says Catherine.

“They help eliminate cold spots by reflecting the heat evenly across the room, ensuring a more comfortable and inviting living environment.”
