‘I’m a driving expert – making your car winter driving ready could save lives'

Running a vehicle on the incorrect kind of engine oil can cause numerous issues including a bigger risk of breaking down in colder temperatures and, in some cases, significantly increased wear to engine components.

When getting a vehicle’s oil changed, motorists should always check the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer, which is printed in the owner’s manual.

In addition, many experts advise that drivers check the oil level and its cleanliness every two weeks and before long journeys.

Later in the video, Abigayle also noted that motorists should make sure that their vehicle’s tyres have enough tread, else they could be risking accidents and fines.

She explained: “Tyres, make sure your tyres have at least 3mm of tread and, if you are living in a particular area that gets a lot of snowfall and ice, get some winter tyres. They really make a difference.”

Drivers should also regularly check their car’s tyre pressures, with colder temperatures often causing the air found inside to compress.

Finally, Abigayle noted that drivers should also be mindful that all the lights on the vehicle are in working order to make sure they will be visible to other road users.

She added: “Electrics, check that all your lights are working. It gets dark fast in winter, so just make sure that your headlights, brake lights and everything is working.

“It doesn’t take long; it could stop you getting a fine and it could potentially save somebodies life.”
