Ignore Windows 11 – unexpected free Windows 10 upgrade is coming to your PC soon

Microsoft will officially end all support for Windows 10 late next year but despite warnings that new features and upgrades could be put on ice in the run-up to this major date, it seems all is not lost for users of this massively popular operating system. As spotted by the team at Windows Central, it appears that the Redmond firm is working on an upgrade that will bring Windows 11’s more immersive weather experience to Windows 10 PCs in the coming months.

This MSN richer weather function includes more dynamic, interactive weather updates. So, as you hover over the weather on your lock screen, you will see more information about conditions outside.

Also when tapping or clicking on the weather card, Microsoft Edge opens with the full forecast in MSN weather. This is clearly not a groundbreaking upgrade that will change your life but it does show that Microsoft hasn’t completely forgotten about Windows 10 and more changes could be coming in the future.

With over 65 percent of the world’s PCs still using this OS, it’s hard for the US firm to ignore it and maybe there will be more updates to come over the next 18 months.

Microsoft has already confirmed that it will now offer extended Windows 10 security updates past next October’s deadline although it will ask those who want this service to pay a yearly free.

“If you are an individual consumer or an organization who elects to continue using Windows 10 after support ends on October 14, 2025, you will have the option of enrolling your PC in the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program,” Microsoft confirmed.

“The ESU program enables PCs to continue to receive Critical and Important security updates (as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center) through an annual subscription service after support ends. More details including pricing will be provided at a later date.”

If you haven’t yet switched to Windows 11 then you have until October 2025. That’s the date when Microsoft says it will end free support for Windows 10. However, with so many PCs still running this ageing software things might change especially as many devices aren’t compatible with Windows 11 and could end up on the scrap heap.

That’s something nobody wants to see so watch this space.
