Grapes are a staple fruit in many people’s food shops, but they can turn soft and soggy very soon after purchasing. As they ripen, their cells break down, leading to a loss of firmness and a more spongy texture. Whilst some people may not mind this, I prefer my grapes to be crunchy and firm.
Storing fruit incorrectly and washing it before putting it in the fridge are a couple of reasons why it may not last long. I would buy grapes every single week in my food shop, only to find a couple of days later that they weren’t fresh anymore, so I decided to try out one food storage hack, and I’ve never gone back.
I usually store grapes in the plastic punnet they come in, as it’s recommended to provide air circulation.
However, this method just wasn’t working for me, so I decided to opt to store them in a glass bowl with a rubber lid to see how they would ripen.
Whilst some recommend avoiding an airtight container, the glass in the fridge meant the grapes remained extra cold, helping them to stay fresh.
I made sure not to overcrowd the grapes to give them some room, and I was pleasantly surprised that they lasted so long.
Grapes also tend to stay fresher for longer when kept in bunches, as the stems provide some structural support and reduce water loss.
