'I asked my boss for the day off to see my dying grandad – this was his brutal response'

A woman who asked for the day off work to visit her grandfather in hospital got a brutal text from her boss and has shared it online.

Jenna got a call from her mother saying that her grandfather had fallen down, seriously injuring himself.

He was in hospital with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The family were unsure “how long he might be around for”.

So Jenna texted her boss to ask if she could leave by a certain time and if not she’d need the day off.

She told him: “I’m sorry for the late notice, my mum just called me”.

But her boss was not all that understanding. He simply said: “That’s not gonna work. We are a week before Christmas. Don’t bother coming in.”

Jenna was shocked by this response, assuming it meant that she had been fired.

She took to Reddit and posted the message exchange with the caption: “Guess I’m looking for a new job.”

One person replied: “So he can’t afford to lose any employees before Christmas even for a single day, but also you’re fired and now they’re down an employee for the rest of the month.”

Others criticised Jenna for giving away too much information. A user explained: “Please stop offering so much information to employers.

“Just a simple, ‘I have a family emergency and cannot come in tomorrow’ and leave it at that. None of this, ‘I can come in until 8:30, my grandpa fell, etc.’ This is not helpful.”

But some sided with the manager, not believing Jenna’s story.

One said: “I have a suspicion that she has a habit of calling off based on the conversation. To be honest, I’m not believing that story.”

“So, vet appointment was your first excuse for missing work and when that didn’t work you made up a story about your grandfather?” another said.

“But then you still had to cover your tracks on the phony vet thing in order to sound super credible.”
