A newborn died hours after birth, linked to his mother’s cocaine use during pregnancy. An inquest found the drug exposure to be a secondary factor in the death, though the coroner said its precise role in the premature labour and fatal outcome remains unclear.

Details emerged at Pontypridd coroner’s court: the baby was born at 24 weeks—16 weeks early—at his mother’s home in Builth Wells, Powys. Coroner Rachel Knight outlined the sequence: “His arrival was unexpected. Emergency services were called and responded quickly.

“Despite their efforts, his condition worsened, and he died the same day at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.”

Ms Knight’s conclusion noted: “[The baby’s] mother tested positive for cocaine during pregnancy, with limited prenatal care.

“Post-mortem results indicated an amniotic fluid infection in the mother.

“It is unclear how much these elements contributed to the premature birth and death.”

The medical cause was prematurity, with contributing factors of amniotic fluid infection and in-utero cocaine exposure, reported Wales Online.
