Prince William is said to have had a sweet name for his beloved grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The late Queen – who died aged 96 in 2022 – is often referred to as Queen Elizabeth II or Her Majesty, but to her relatives, she appears to have had some very sweet nicknames.
Her late husband Prince Philip, who passed away in 2021, often called her ‘Lilibet’, whilst the young royals – such as Prince George and Princess Charlotte – referred to her as ‘Gan Gan’.
According to the Daily Mail, William would often call her ‘Gary’ – much to the confusion of everyone present.
Whilst playing in Buckingham Palace, William would say this instead of shouting for his ‘Granny’, reports the Mirror.
The column by the publication reports: “”A guest who went to help asked who Gary was, assuming it must be a member of the royal household… [William] hasn’t learned to say Granny yet”.”
William, himself, has also gained many nicknames growing up, including getting called ‘Wombat’ by his mother, the late Princess Diana.
In an NBC interview in 2007, William admitted to being stuck with the name, stating that he “can’t get rid of it now”.
He said: “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far, but when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal, so I just basically got called that, not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.”
