Giant 78m-long abnormal load to make 38-mile journey through UK this weekend

A lorry carrying a massive abnormal load measuring a whopping 78 metres is set to turn heads as it passes through Wales. It will take three weekends to haul the truck’s load just 38 miles up the road from its starting point, Newport Docks.

The trailer used to transport a transformer, turbine and generator is just under seven metres wide, 78 metres long and has a staggering 28 axles. It will travel at a slow but steady 5-15mph.

It will start its journey at the docks and force the closure of carriageways along a series of roads before reaching Hirwaun Power Station, its final stop.

This will be the largest abnormal movement in the history of Welsh roads, according to Wales Online.

Traffic Wales says because of the site’s location it can only be reached by road rather than rail.

The movement is the culmination of herculean efforts from the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) and firm, Future Valleys, as well as Hirwaun Power and hauliers, Allelys.

Months of preparation, planning and assessment have gone into the movement to make sure the loads can be safely carried.

It will be escorted along the route by officers from Gwent Police and South Wales Police.

Once the turbine, generator and transformer are installed at Hirwaun Power Station, they will be plugged into the national grid.

The equipment will be used at peak periods of demand and when renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, are unable to generate the electricity needed to keep the country’s lights on.

Hirwaun Power Station is expected to operate no more than 1,500 hours a year and will contribute to the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Its 299MW capacity is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 150,000 households.

Traffic Wales said precise timings of the movement have been carefully coordinated with the current A465 dualling project.

Movement will take place between 8pm and 6am over three weekends, with carriageways on the A449, A40 and A465 closing to accommodate the giant load.

It will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption, but dates and timings depend on the weather so these might change. People in the area should expect rolling road blocks.

People have been urged to use alternative routes and allow extra travel time.
