Full list of UK school closures as 48 hours of winter blizzards to batter nation

The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings cover a 13 local authorities as wintry blizzards are set to batter the United Kingdom for 48 hours.

The first amber warning, which came in force at midnight, covers large parts of the Midlands, including Staffordshire and Derbyshire as well as South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire in the North East.

A second amber weather warning is set to come in force at 8am covering parts of Wales and Shropshire. So far schools in Wales have already started to confirm they are closed on Thursday, February 8.

It comes as Wales looks set to receive the brunt of the wintry conditions. The Met Office has forecast around 15cm of snow for parts of Wales – with up to 25cm in areas above 200m.

The Met Office said: “Snow is expected to develop during Thursday morning and become persistent and at times heavy before slowly easing later in the day. As milder air begins to arrive from the south, there is a chance that snow could turn to freezing rain across some higher routes above 200 metres.

“Across the warning area, 10-15 cm of snow is expected quite widely but some places, particularly those above 200 metres, may see 20-25 cm of snow. Strong and gusty easterly winds may lead to some drifting in places.”

Being mindful of the bad weather, a number of schools already announced they won’t be opening. These are:
