The national senator for Tierra del Fuego, Senator Pablo Daniel Blanco from the United Provinces alliance, presented a draft declaration expressing his strongest condemnation of a British government competition inviting Argentine, Uruguayan, and Paraguayan students to visit the Falkland Islands as tourists. Attacking the @‌Falklands_cerca X, which circulated the competition, the senator said: “The United Kingdom wants young Argentines to see our Malvinas Islands as a foreign destination.

“No Argentine can be invited by the United Kingdom to a contest to learn about their own country. No Argentine is a tourist in their homeland.” Senator Blanco also expressed his rejection of the use of that official social media account to promote the trip and expressed his concern about the Argentine Foreign Office’s silence. “The Foreign Minister must demand an explanation from the British Embassy in Buenos Aires and publicly condemn this,” he stated. He also warned about the national government’s worrying lack of interest in what he called the UK’s repeated actions against Argentine sovereignty, such as the presidential praise for Margaret Thatcher, the lack of response to the Cape Bayonet military exercises, the announcement of the construction of a port in the Malvinas Islands and the visit by former Foreign Secretary David Cameron last February.

“While governors of my province repudiated that visit as a provocation and an insult to our veterans, the Foreign Ministry remained completely silent. This is unacceptable,” Senator Blanco said.

Finally, the senator called for a firmer stance from the national government: “This Senate expects an immediate change of attitude. The Argentine Republic reaffirms its sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas.”

On X, the @‌Falklands_cerca account wrote: “Registration is now open! If you’re a university student in Uruguay, Argentina or Paraguay, and are over 18, you can win a one-week trip to the Falkland Islands to experience their nature, culture, and community firsthand.

“How to participate? You must send a video of up to 1 minute in English answering: “Why would I like to meet my neighbors in the Falkland Islands?” to the email address corresponding to your country’s embassy. You have until August 25th! Don’t miss this opportunity to come visit us, we can’t wait to meet you!”

This update comes just weeks after the governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and South Atlantic Islands, Gustavo Melella, confronted the future US ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, and warned him not to interfere in Tierra del Fuego’s internal affairs.

Through a series of posts on his official X account, Mr Melella stated: “In Tierra del Fuego, we do not allow ourselves to be disciplined by anyone and we make decisions autonomously. In light of Ambassador Peter Lamelas’s statements, we cannot remain silent. It is not acceptable for a diplomatic official to adopt a stance bordering on interventionism and ignore the sovereignty of our province.”

Meanwhile, in April, Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi backed Argentina’s controversial claim on the Falklands, stoking tensions over the remote British overseas territory in the South Atlantic. In his speech at the 9th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Mr Orsi lent support to Argentina’s sovereignty claim, echoing the position of Argentine President Javier Milei, who has consistently called for negotiations over the future of the islands.
