Expert shares best used EVs to buy for as little as £5,000 – ‘you really can’t ignore it’

A motoring personality has shared a number of used electric cars that budget-conscious buyers can pick up for as little as £5,000.

As many companies sell their fleets of electric vehicles, an oversupply on the used car market is causing prices to drop, making it a good time for motorists to make the switch to an EV.

Recently, the YouTuber Electric Vehicle Man uploaded a video in which he suggested a list of affordable models, noting that the Renault Zoe is a great choice for drivers wanting an agile electric hatchback.

He explained: “Let’s start off with this, the Renault Zoe. This is very much at the cheapest end, £3,500. It’s a 2015 car, it is a battery lease, but for that price it’s an utter bargain. I got one for £4,400 a few months ago which we’ve now sold on, brilliant.

“The only thing with this, because it is a bit of a gamble, it’s MOT is due next month. Now the battery lease, the biggest thing you’d worry about, is covered but ultimately it could be either a bargain or there’s some bill waiting. Either way, you’re probably looking at about £1,000 cheaper than it should be had it had 12 months MOT.”

Whilst the particular example Electric Vehicle Man showed in the video came with a very short MOT, the YouTuber noted that there are many solid examples currently on sale for low prices.

Later in the segment, he showed viewers a clean Zoe built in 2020 that was advertised at just over £9,000, some £22,000 less than a brand-new example.

However, when buying a used electric car, the expert suggested that drivers should always see if the battery is leased, meaning the owner paying a regular fee for it, based on their mileage.

Electric Vehicle Man also recommended that motorists looking for a used electric car with plenty of room and up-to-the-minute styling should consider the Citroen e-C4.

He added: “Something a little bigger now, the Citroen e-C4. The unique selling point of this, the thing that makes us like it, is it has something that the other cars don’t.

“It’s super smooth, super comfortable, the suspension is just witchcraft. £13,250 asking price for a two-and-a-half-year-old car that’s done 40,000 miles.”

Finally, the YouTuber highlighted that drivers can really impress the neighbours on a £20,000 budget with a used Audi e-tron.

He continued: “Let’s go a little bit more premium now, the Audi e-tron. Less than £20,000 for a 70kWh Audi SUV. It’s a 2020 model so three years old, it’s done 65,000 miles, solid interior, nice ride, quick enough.

“Yes, it’s 50 shades of Audi, I’m not an Audi SUV fan, but when you start to look at that interior, it’ll be really comfortable, solid build quality for less than £20,000. You really can’t ignore it.”
