Energy bill prices expected to drop in spring and again in summer

Annual energy bills for a typical household are expected to reduce by £268 in spring – with a further summer fall.

Consultancy firm Cornwall Insight says bills in the three months from April to June could drop to £1,660, under the official price cap set by the UK’s energy regulator Ofgem.

The energy price cap limits how much suppliers can charge households for each unit of energy they use.

The trend could continue with the price cap easing to £1,590 in July before a slight increase to £1,640 from October.

Natalie Mathie, an energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “Suggestions the price cap could fall in April will bring a glimmer of hope to consumers.

“But they still face a tough winter with high energy bills. Energy will rise in January with many households likely to pay more than last year as there is no government support.

“The prospect of a 14% fall in April, and potentially another drop in July, means there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
