The connected vehicle expert Geotab has shared a number of tips that can help electric vehicle owners get the most from their car during cold temperatures.
As the Met Office predicts a cold snap will bring snow and ice to parts of the UK, almost all electric cars will see a drop in range.
However, a spokesperson for Geotab noted that owners of most modern electric cars can extend the range during winter by remembering to pre-condition the battery.
They explained: “Rather than switching on the heating when getting into an electric vehicle on a cold day and having to wait for the windows to clear, drivers should consider heating their car while it is plugged in.
“This way, there is a reduced impact on a vehicle’s range whilst driving. Plus, in some vehicles, this can serve to pre-condition the battery ahead of time rather than on the road.”

The company noted that the range an electric vehicle is able to cover can depend on a number of factors, such as the amount the car is carrying, the behaviour of the driver and the temperature.
Whilst some of the latest models factor this into account, motorists must always take caution, advising drivers to plan their journeys ahead of time.
They noted that there are a number of apps and websites that allow EV owners to plan journeys, so they are never far away from a charging station.
Geotab also recommended that electric car owners wanting to improve their vehicle’s range this winter heat up the interior effectively.
They advised: “Geotab’s data shows that an EV’s optimal temperature for maximum efficiency is around 21.5 degrees Celsius. The day-to-day range of an electric vehicle is affected by temperature primarily due to auxiliary heating and cooling.
“Not only does energy from the battery power the vehicle, it also powers vehicle systems, most notably regulating the temperature of the vehicle cabin and battery.”
Instead of using the conventional heating system in the car, Geotab advised EV owners to make use of other commonly found functions within the vehicle.
Many models feature heated seats and a warming steering wheel, which can help occupants of the vehicle to warm up on cold mornings.
Finally, if it is available on their vehicle, the company advised drivers to put their car into Eco mode, which sacrifices some power to improve the range.
