'Easiest way' to keep bread from moulding will keep it fresh – avoid common mistake

Bread typically lasts around a week once opened, but it can spoil quickly if it isn’t being stored in the correct ways.

Something that can help bread last longer is using a traditional bread box, which might seem bulky for smaller kitchens or countertops, but can prevent food wastage.

A bread box is specifically designed to maintain the ideal level of air circulation and humidity, effectively slowing down the growth of mould.

However, it’s recommended to store only one loaf of bread in the box at a time to avoid excess humidity buildup, which can inadvertently promote mould growth.

Although the exact reason behind this phenomenon isn’t entirely clear, scientific studies have confirmed its effectiveness.

As for the material of the bread box, whether it’s tin, wood, or ceramic – any of these materials will serve the purpose well.

One common mistake when it comes to storing bread is to keep it in the fridge.

Moisture is bread’s worst enemy as mould thrives in moist environments, and refrigerators are notorious for retaining moisture.

Storing bread in the fridge essentially provides the perfect conditions for mould to develop.

Bread ideally needs to be kept in a cool, dry place. However, refrigerators are not dry environments.

The only part of the fridge that provides a cool, dry space is the freezer, where bread can be stored without the risk of mould growth.

According to research conducted by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences division of Polytechnic Institute, regardless of the type of bread, it’s generally better to store it at room temperature to preserve its freshness.

If you’re short on kitchen space or prefer not to have a bread box on display, storing your bread in the pantry is a convenient alternative.

The pantry provides ample space for air circulation, helping to maintain the bread’s freshness.

However, if your pantry is located near the refrigerator, it’s advisable to choose a cabinet further away.

This is because refrigerators emit heat and humidity, conditions that can accelerate the deterioration of bread
