Drivers urged they do not need to get car serviced at dealership to protect warranty

The motoring service provider Halfords has warned drivers that they could be over-paying if they get their vehicle maintained at a car dealership.

In a recent survey the company noted that 54 percent of drivers noted that they had been told their vehicle must be serviced at an official dealership in order to protect the warranty.

However, Graham Stapleton, Chief Executive of Halfords, highlighted that motorists will not be voiding their car’s warranty if they get it serviced elsewhere.

He advised: “People have every right to use a dealer for servicing if they wish, but it’s important they do so out of choice, not because they believe they are under an obligation.

“Our research shows there is a great deal of confusion, and it likely starts with what people are told on the forecourt.”

Halfords also noted that car dealerships often charge significantly more to service vehicles compared to third party organisations.

The company noted that motorists who get a Ford Focus serviced at an official dealership typically pay £486.76, over £200 more than Halfords.

They estimated that if drivers can collectively save almost £400 million if they get their car serviced elsewhere, rather than a dealership.

Graham noted that it is important that motorists know they can get their vehicle serviced or repaired wherever they want without fear of risking their warranty.

He continued: “Halfords will always offer a high-quality service by fully qualified technicians at a great price. The average saving versus dealerships is often very significant and our garages are often more convenient.

“My message to motorists is simple. Whatever you drive, whether it’s a Ford or a Ferrari, you have a choice about where you get your vehicle serviced. Dealer, or no dealer.”
