US and EU diplomats urge restraint amid Gaza war

Top US and European diplomats have pleaded to keep the Gaza war from spreading across the Middle East.

American Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the call after senior Hezbollah commander Wissam Tawil was killed in an Israeli drone strike in Lebanon.

He said: “This is a moment of profound tension. This is a conflict that could easily metastasise.”

And EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell added: “If this tragedy doesn’t end soon, the entire Middle East might end up in flames.”

Mr Blinken, above, in Qatar on his latest Middle East tour, also condemned right-wing Israeli ministers who demanded that Palestinians be resettled elsewhere.

He said: “Palestinian civilians must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow. They cannot, they must not be pressed to leave Gaza.” His comments came as up to 70 people were killed at Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza with women and children among the dead.

The Israel Defence Forces said it “acted against a military target” and that it “takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm”.

More than 60 were reportedly also killed in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
