A professional house cleaner has said that one of the biggest mistakes she witnesses in her industry is people using bleach to get rid of mould in bathrooms and shared there is a much more effective solution.
Lisa has been a cleaning professional for almost a decade and is the founder of CleanHappyCo, a residential housekeeping business.
In an online video, Lisa explained that bleach should only be used to remove mould from “non-porous surfaces” which makes it useless to use in showers. She said: “Most showers have grout and caulking, which are porous.”
Bleach will only act as a “band-aid” according to Lisa, and the mould comes back much harsher than before.
Lisa said: “It’s going to look like the mould is gone a few minutes after you spray it on, but it’s really just pushing that mould further into the surface and it’s going to come back even worse.”

However, there is a natural and much better cleaning solution to get rid of mold in the shower, which is hydrogen peroxide.
Lisa said: “Grab yourself some hydrogen peroxide, fully saturate the area, and let it sit for at least 10 minutes
“If you’re dealing with vertical surfaces, use the spray bottle and keep on spraying throughout the 10 minutes so that it’s not drying.”
If you want to thoroughly make sure to get rid of the mold for good, one tip is to soak cotton balls into the hydrogen peroxide and leave them on top of the moldy surface.
Hydrogen peroxide is much more successful at getting rid of mold from showers, plus you will not have to worry about using harsh chemicals.
The only downside is that you may not be able to remove mold from shower caulking, which can be extremely difficult to get rid of once it has grown there.
Lisa said: “There is nothing that’s going to make it appear not there. You’re going to have to rip it all out and re-caulk the area.”
The best way to get rid of mold in this part of the shower is to take precautions to make sure mold never makes its way there, and there are a few simple ways to keep mold away.
Lisa said: “To keep the mold from growing back, you want to address why it’s growing in the first place: moisture.
“I recommend keeping a squeegee in your shower. And every time you shower, squeegee the walls down, dry it off with a towel.
She added: “Also make sure you’re running an exhaust fan or keeping a window open to keep the area well-ventilated.”
