Check if your car has tiny button to beat cold weather issue

When driving a modern car, it can often be fitted with so many features that there are bound to be some buttons you’ve simply never pressed and features you’ve never tested out. With the colder weather settling in, most Brits will need to prepare for the return of some common winter issues.

From freezing temperatures to foggy windows, it’s usually best to give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning to make sure the car is clear and ready to go. TikTok creator @capturing_cars shared a video online earlier this year about one specific button that lots of cars might have to speed up this process.

Instead of leaning out of front windows and wiping away condensation, which can potentially lead to streaky surfaces, modern cars may be equipped with a specific button that can solve this situation “in minutes” without you having to get your hands dirty.

Wiping away a build-up of condensation, he said: “Did you know there’s no need to try to clean your mirrors off like this. Have a look in your car and see if you have this symbol anywhere in your vehicle – usually on the door mirror adjustment.”

The clip shows a symbol that looks like a typical car wing mirror with wavy lines rising up through them. In the video, this was on a dial but it could be a standalone button in your car.

The former car salesman explained: “Turn the dial to that and what you’re doing is turning on your heated mirrors. This will go from looking [wet] to [clear] in a matter of about a minute.”

Keeping the wing mirrors clear of condensation makes sure that you have an unobstructed view of the road behind you. In the UK, driving with obscured mirrors can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 in court, or potentially a £100 on-the-spot fine and three penalty points, though this is more often associated with driving without a functional mirror.

The Road Traffic Act makes it illegal to drive if your view of the road is obstructed. The Highway Code requires windscreens and windows to be kept clean and free from obstructions, and this applies to wing mirrors as well.

People were quick to respond to the video, having never known what the button did in their own car. One said: ” Oh my god … I have had an Audi A3 for 6 months and never noticed that before!”

Another added: “OMG I need to check my car now!” A third put: “I’ve had this feature for ages, now I finally know how to use it!”
