Compared to conventional headlight bulbs, LEDs are able to last significantly longer, consume less power, and can offer drivers much better visibility, particularly when travelling on unlit roads.
However, an increasing number of motorists are frustrated over the amount of glare that oncoming traffic receives from them, particularly if the driver is using full-beams.
Currently, the petition has gained more than 1,300 signatures, however the figure must rise to more than 10,000 by June 5 2025 for the Government to respond to the petition.
Currently, drivers are legally permitted to fit LED headlights to their vehicle if they were fitted by the manufacturer or are original equipment (OE) parts.
Nevertheless, drivers are not able to upgrade a car that was sold with conventional halogen bulbs to LEDs or other forms of high intensity discharge (HID) lights.
Owners of vehicles that are illegally fitted with LED headlights could face a number of complications, including MOT failures.
However, many motorists think that the law needs to go further in order to reduce accidents caused by the bright lights, with Reddit user u/Ancient-Tangerine445 stating that the dazzle is coming from multiple directions.
They added: “I drive a low car and on the drive home from work I’m half blind most of the time, not just from cars on the other side [of the road], it’s cars driving behind you and shining bright white light into your mirrors, reflected directly into your eyeballs.
“The other day a car pulled up behind me, and their headlights were so bright I could see more from their headlights behind my car than my own ones. I’ve had enough.”
