One of the more frustrating parts of laundry is waiting for clothes to dry, especially when there is something in there we are anxious to wear again. When doing laundry, drying clothes fast is vital not only to daily schedules but also in making sure to banish musty odours and keep their freshly washed scent.
Luckily, there is an abundance of internet hacks that promise to help speed up the drying process. Taking to her Instagram page @alifebetterorganized, where she shares tips on all things cleaning and home-related, Debbie Sandlet posted her “best laundry tip”, and that’s to speed up your clothes drying time with a dry towel.
Although there are quite a few items you should never put in your tumble dryer, a dry towel is definitely not one of them.
Debbie explained: “Adding a dry towel will help to absorb some of the moisture while the wet and dry items mix. This reduces the humidity in the dryer, thus allowing the clothes to dry quicker.
“It also adds bulk to fluff and separates the clothes, helping them dry more efficiently.”
Not only does the method cut down on the drying time, but the process also uses less energy, so you’re likely to save some money along the way.
For “best results”, only leave for between five and 15 minutes, depending on load.
You just want to disperse some of the initial moisture, not give the machine an extra wet thing to dry.
Keeping it in your dryer for the entire length of your cycle can actually contribute to adding the dampness back into your clothes and slow the drying process down.
While this hack is safe, it’s not recommended to use it with your best towels to avoid the risk of having the fibres turn rough in the drying process.
It should also go without saying that using a dirty towel is not a good idea either.
