Boris Johnson is beaten by two huge names in poll on your favourite Tory Prime Minister


Margaret Thatcher has topped an Express poll on who is the best post-war Tory prime minister, with Sir Winston Churchill coming second and Boris Johnson third.

The Iron Lady was the overwhelming winner with 66 per cent, after more than 16,000 readers voted in our survey as of 1.30pm today.

Baroness Thatcher was the UK’s first female premier and was in 10 Downing Street from 1979 to 1990.

Her legacy continues today with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer recently heaping praise on her.

Sir Winston was in second place with 12 per cent of votes in the poll by this website.

Sir Winston, who rallied Britain to victory during World War Two, had a second stint as PM from 1951 to 1955.

Boris Johnson was third in the poll with 11 per cent of readers choosing him as the best Conservative PM.

The charismatic 59-year-old led the Tories to to a landslide victory at the 2019 general election.

Mr Johnson sealed a Brexit deal with the EU early on in his premiership before steering the country through the Covid pandemic.

He was forced out of No 10 last year following a series of scandals including partygate.

But Mr Johnson vowed “I’ll be back” in a message to Daily Express readers when he formally resigned as an MP in June.

Sir John Major and Harold Macmillan came next in the poll with two per cent each.

Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Theresa May, Lord Cameron and Sir Edward Health were all on one per cent. A further two per cent of voters said they did not know.
