Big Ben in U.K. ceases to "bong" as famed clock stops working twice in one week

The Big Ben in London’s Great Clock of Westminster  failed to produce its famous “bong” after it stopped ticking for the second time in a week, according to the British Broadcasting Corp.

The clock failed to chime for the first time on May 10 and on Wednesday this week, with all hands freezing for roughly half an hour, the BBC reported.

The hiccups come just months after the clock, part of the Elizabeth Tower, was unveiled earlier this year following a five-year and roughly $99.5 million project to restore it.

A House of Commons spokesperson told the BBC that “no risks to the integrity” have been identified and that the issue had quickly been resolved by adding extra lubricant to the mechanisms and more weight to  the section that pushes the hands for additional power.
