Army conscription: Veteran says Brits would ‘have to be dragged’ to fight Putin in WW3

A veteran who lost his arm and a leg while fighting against the Taliban in Afghanistan warned that Brits would be dragged “kicking and screaming” if they had to fight in WW3.

After it was announced that NATO had drafted in 90,000 troops for training, questions have been raised as to whether or not another world war could be on the cards.

General Sir Patrick Sanders warned today that it would require the “whole-of-nation undertaking” if war did break out.

But speaking to The Sun, ex Royal Marine Ben McBean, 36, said there’s no incentive for Brits to sign up with poor pay and bad conditions.

Ben, who was seriously wounded in 2008 in Afghanistan, said: “It’s not the same as back in the day, people aren’t as patriotic.

“That mentality is gone and it is going to be hard to get it back. You would have to drag people in kicking and screaming to get them to conscript.

“The adverts don’t help, the recruiting system isn’t great, the recruiting office where I live has closed down. The way the country is being run, and then people being skint and underpaid, there’s not a lot of incentive to want to fight for this country, even if it’s your own country.”

Sir Patrick Sanders has said British men and women should be prepared to fight Vladimir Putin’s forces if Russia goes to war with NATO.

According to The Telegraph, Sir Sanders does not support conscription but believes a “shift” in the British public’s mindset is needed in order to get more people to sign up.

In a speech on Wednesday, he is due to encourage Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government to “mobilise the nation” after years of cuts to Britain’s Armed Forces.

Sir Sanders’ comments come as senior NATO officials warned the armed bloc could be in a war with the country illegally invading Ukraine within the next 20 years.

This isn’t the first time Sir Sanders has warned about the impending threat of World War 3 in Europe. In a 2022 speech soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he warned: “This is our 1937 moment.

“We are not at war, but must act rapidly so that we aren’t drawn into one through a failure to contain territorial expansion.”
