Alaska weather: Homeless 'frozen solid' as -40F temps make US city 'too cold to live'


Freezing temperatures and snowfall have hit the US city of Alaska’s capital, Anchorage, with locals saying it’s “too much” to bear.

The deadly cold weather has led to fuel thickening, roofs collapsing and tragically, homeless people being found ‘frozen solid’.

In Alaska, record-breaking snowfall of more 100 inches this week and temperatures as low as -40C have made the state’s capital Anchorage completely unbearable, particularly for its nearly 300,000 residents.

For homeless people in Alaska, this means a deadly crisis. If they can’t find a warming centre, survival is almost impossible in Anchorage. Kevin Dahlgren, founder of Truth on the Streets, witnessed a harrowing scene.

He can barely spot his white car after two days of heavy snowfall.

Roofs are collapsing under the snow’s weight, with two incidents in the region. A thousand businesses have been told to close until it’s safe.

Yet, some are enjoying the frosty times. “It’s been cold, and we’ve had a ton of snow,” shared ex-doctor Paul Ferucci, who’s loving testing his gear for a winter race.

“And really, if you like the outdoors in the winter, it’s been one of the best winters so far that I can remember.”
