Incredible pictures show aftermath of Manchester crash that ripped roof off bus

The aftermath of a crash which tore the roof off a Manchester bus has been revealed in incredible pictures.

The Stagecoach bus collided with a tree at about 8am this morning in Wilbraham Road in the city’s Chorlton suburb, with police currently at the scene having cordoned off the road.

It is thought no one was injured in the incident, with people living in the area unsure how the driver and passengers escaped unscathed.

No arrests were made following the crash.

One woman who lives opposite the crash site said she “leapt out of bed” after being awoken by a “loud ripping noise”, she then rushed to her window to see the bus’s roof “hanging off the back” and passengers on the upper deck frozen in shock.

She told the Manchester Evening News: “It had literally just happened. The roof was hanging off the back and people were taking photographs. People were still on the upper deck and gradually coming down.

“They were obviously still in shock. People didn’t move for quite a while. There was no screaming or shouting.

“The peculiar noise was obviously the top being ripped off the bus. I cannot believe no one was injured.”

She said another Stagecoach pulled up behind it with the driver asking if he could help, with the woman admitting to feeling sorry for the driver remarking: “I just kept thinking, you poor thing”.

Another resident said she was working from home when she heard a “boom” and the sound of “glass smashing”. When she looked out of her window she saw the bus with “half the roof pulled back”.

She said: “There were a lot of people on the bus but it looked like no one was hurt. They stayed for a while.”

People walking in the area stopped in their tracks on seeing the smashed-up bus and gathered to watch as recovery crews worked to clear the wreckage.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called to reports of a collision on Wilbraham Road in Manchester at around 7.50am this morning, where a bus collided with a tree.”
