Air fryer chocolate cake is 'a sweet tooth's dream' – cooks in under 25 minutes

Air fryers can be used to cook so many different foods but cake isn’t the first thing that springs to mind.

That said, the handy appliance is more effective than some may think when it comes to baking a traditional chocolate sponge cake.

Martin Senders, Philips’ air fryer chef said: “For occasions like this, the air fryer is your friend – offering quicker cooking times and simplifying the cooking process so you can take the stress out of the kitchen without compromising taste.”

He claimed that this chocolate cake is “a sweet-tooth’s dream, and perfect for an after-dinner treat”.

Not only does it cook in under an hour but the egg whites make for a perfectly fluffy sponge that’s lighter than most.

Start by cutting the butter into pieces and put it in a heat-resistant bowl that fits in the air fryer.

Next, cut the chocolate into pieces and add to the bowl to melt with the butter, then cook everything in an air fryer for just three minutes at 120C.

Stir the melted chocolate to combine with the butter, then take two more bowls to separate the egg white from the yolk.

Whisk the egg whites while gradually adding the sugar until stiff peaks form to create a meringue, which is responsible for the light and fluffy texture.

Whisk the egg yolks and honey separately until foamy, and then stir in the chocolate mixture. Fold the egg whites into the same bowl as everything else, then pour the total mixture into the baking tray.

Cook in the air fryer for 18 minutes at 160C, then leave to cool and serve on its own, with frosting, or fresh cream and berries.
