Are you ready to explore one of the most beautiful villages in England? Shere is a quiet, peaceful area just an hour away from London and is the perfect place for a long weekend or a romantic getaway. Located in the Tillingbourne valley, Shere is nestled between the towns of Guildford and Dorking.
The village is also next to one of the most famous filming locations in Hollywood history. Hankley Common is only a few miles west of Shele and has been used in “hundreds” of blockbuster movies, including James Bond.
You may recognise the location in the 2012 film ‘Skyfall’ as the site of James Bond’s ancestral mansion in Scotland. The location has also been featured in the 007 flick The World Is Not Enough, Macbeth, Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Napoleon, and Die Another Day.
The village itself is also seen in major films such as Bridget Jones, The Edge of Reason, and the beloved Christmas film, The Holiday.
Shere is also best known for its unbeatable views of the surrounding countryside. It is situated in a nationally protected area that includes the highest point in South East England, Leith Hill.
If you want to discover the village and its past, the Church of St Peter and St Paul has a rich history and dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era. You can also treat yourself and pay a visit to The Dabbling Duck, which is a much-loved café restaurant in the heart of Shere.
It is the perfect spot for a relaxing coffee and cake, or a delicious lunch after exploring the stunning local area. Whether you are a lover of history, stunning scenery, or want to see some Hollywood hotspots, there is something for everyone in the village of Shere.
Shere is just under 35 miles from London and easy to reach by car or train. If you are planning a day out to Shere from London via car, the easiest route is via the A3; however, you can also go via the M25 or A25.
There are a few routes you can take to reach Shere by train from London. From London Victoria, you can take a Southern train to Dorking Station and then get the number 32 bus to Shere Village Hall.
