Best way to dry wet clothes – and it’s not on the radiator

Drying clothes indoors when you’ve not got a tumble dryer isn’t always easy. This is especially true when it starts to get colder outside, and it can often seem like days before your laundry is truly dry.

For many people, hanging them up on a clothes airer is the way to go. However, if you’re guilty of putting your clothes on the radiator to dry, it’s worth ditching this for an alternative but similar method that’s ‘more cost effective’. It was shared by Lynsey Queen of Clean last year, but remains relevant now we’re heading into autumn.

It might be a bit too soon for you to put your heating on, but when you do, it might be worth investing in some radiator rails to dry your clothes.

These nifty gadgets are positioned over your radiator, allowing your clothes to hang there and dry off from the warmth.

Lynsey recommends doing this rather than putting your wet laundry straight on the radiator. In a TikTok video, she said: “If your boiler is working hard, it will add to your energy bills, plus the heat from the radiator won’t be able to circulate and heat the room.”

However, if the clothes are simply placed close to the radiator, it’s a much more ‘cost-effective’ way to dry. You can pick one up from Amazon for as little as £9.99, and it has four tiers.

If you’re looking for ways to dry your clothes fast without turning the heating on, Lynsey says you can use one simple tool in your bathroom – the shower rail.

All you need to do is hang your clothes on hangers along the pole, open your bathroom window and shut the door, adding a draught excluder if need be.

Bathrooms tend to be quite small, so it shouldn’t be long before your clothes are fresh and dry. And of course, you can still hang your laundry outside, provided the weather is dry enough.

Putting it outside first thing in the morning is key here, as this will give it the most time possible to fully dry off before you bring it back indoors.
