50p dishwasher hack to ‘bring out the extra sparkle’ in cloudy glasses and dull cutlery

With families across the country hosting Boxing Day and New Year’s, getting cutlery and glasses to look clean and sparkling is crucial.

John Cutts, founder of MeandMyGlass.co.uk said: “We’ve all been there when your glasses come out of the dishwasher looking cloudy and milky.

“This could be for several reasons such as hard water, using too much detergent or even old detergent and overloading the dishwasher.

“The good thing is all of these problems can be addressed and tackled. If you have hard water in your area you can install a water softener.

“This will benefit you in some ways, it’ll prevent the buildup of scale in your pipes and will make your water healthier to drink.

“Other easy changes to make include loading the dishwasher properly and adjusting the amount of detergent you use.”

Cutlery can also come out of the appliance looking dull, especially if the set is old and well-used.

To help revive it, experts have recommended adding a piece of tin foil. Dmitry Letsman, Dishwasher Category Manager at appliance brand Hotpoint, said: “Adding in a rolled-up piece of tinfoil in the cutlery department will indeed help bring out the extra sparkle.

“The aluminium in the foil oxidises the detergent, which helps remove even the toughest stains.

“However, this will not work on all cutlery – it has to be silverware, as this is typically made from high-quality materials, such as sterling silver or silver-plated alloys which naturally add shine and lustre.

“Other cutlery, made from stainless steel and synthetic polymers don’t have the same reflective properties.”

The tinfoil will also help glasses to look clean and shiny, but make sure the piece isn’t too small that it gets stuck and lodged in the appliance.

Kitchen foil can be picked up for as little as £2, with less than a quarter needing to be used in the dishwasher, proving to be an affordable cleaning hack.

Another way to easily stop cutlery from looking dull and glasses looking dirty is to avoid overloading the dishwasher.

According to the expert, overloading the appliance can block the spray arms, leading to improper cleaning.

Try to not pile plates and dishes on top of one another, allowing each item to have enough space around it.
