People who want to become British citizens must pass a “Life in the UK” quiz, put together from 3,000 facts about what it means to be British. Introduced in 2005, this test is meant to prove that applicants have “sufficient” knowledge of British life. Anyone who wants to reside in the UK as a citizen must take the test. The quiz, which costs £50, has 24 questions and must be completed within 45 minutes.
A score of 75% (18 out of 24) is required to pass the real citizenship test, however research by Essex University in 2021 suggested that most Brits don’t know enough about their own country to pass. In total, 270 people were given the test, most of whom were UK citizens, and results found two-thirds of Brits fail.

Sir Keir Starmer recently caused controversy with his speech that some say is anti-immigration in which he insisted that new migrants must “learn the language and integrate” once in the UK.
The Prime Minister announced plans to overhaul the UK’s immigration system, including tightening English tests and increasing the time it takes to gain settled status.
These changes aim to make the system “controlled, selective, and fair”, he said. The Life in the UK test will also be reviewed and updated.
All visa applicants, including adult dependents, will be required to demonstrate a basic understanding of English. This could involve passing an online English test like Level A1 or a more advanced test like B2.
The time required to qualify for permanent residence will increase from five to 10 years.
However, individuals may be able to shorten this period by demonstrating their contribution to the UK’s economy and society.
