Working from home crisis as Gen Z refuses to come to office


A survey of adults aged 18-42 – taking in Generation Z and millen-nials – demonstrates how attitudes to work have shifted in recent years.

Many of the 5,000 people polled had begun their careers working from home during the pandemic.

More than half said they suffered from workplace stress, and nearly two thirds believed their employers did not provide an acceptable “well-being culture”.

The majority of the age group want employers to continue offering the flexibility of working from home, with 54 per cent saying they would find an alternative job if hybrid work was not an option.

And almost three quarters (71 per cent) said they would be more productive at work if their employer improved their health and wellbeing.

Wesleigh Roeca, director of business development at Lifesum, which commissioned the research, said: “Gen Z and millennials care deeply about health and wellbeing, and are passionate about finding a job that aligns with their personal values.”

“Flexibility is hugely motivating, which employers must consider when attracting and retaining talent.”

Debbie Porter, managing director at Destination Digital Marketing, said: “Over the last couple of years I’ve had university graduates request 100 per cent working from home, with some saying they won’t even attend the office for an interview.”

“None got very far, because I have no interest in anyone who has no interest in building a relationship with my team.”

“If you are new in an industry you have no meaningful experience in, face-to-face experience and absorbing the culture of a place is crucial to making a good start in a job.”

Office for National Statistics data reveals 54 per cent of millennials work remotely and 44 per cent of all staff work remotely in some form.
