Wooden floors are the first choice for most modern homes as they are easier to clean than carpets, but can quickly lose their shine and beauty if not cleaned properly. A common mistake people make is walking on wooden floors with their shoes on, as increased foot traffic can grind dirt and grime into the protective coating.
Over time, this wears down the wood surface, and using harsh cleaners with soap further damages the floor as it strips the finish. However, Juliet England, an expert from Royal Stonecare, has shared that there is a simple way to polish wooden floors and help minimise scuffing: flat beer.
Juliet said: “Flat beer can make a surprisingly effective wood polisher. Just dab a little on to a soft, non-abrasive cloth and rub in to your wood.
“You should get a shiny, rejuvenated surface – just don’t go overboard with this stuff. Too much of it could make your surface a bit sticky or smelly.”
It may sound bizarre, but beer is mildly acidic because it contains malt, which helps break down dirt or grime on a wooden surface.
However, beer also contains natural sugars that help bring out the natural shine in wood, making it look glossier and more attractive without the need for chemical cleaners.
Flat beer also moisturises the floor, making it look less dull and making small scratches or scuffs less noticeable.
This is a simple, quick cleaning technique that will not restore the wood’s protective finish or fill in any damage, but it can help improve the floor’s appearance until it can be properly repaired.
How to use flat beer to clean and polish a wooden floor
To begin, simply pour beer into an open container and let it sit overnight until it becomes flat.
It is important to make sure the beer loses its fizz so it will not bubble when you try to clean with it, making it much easier to use.
Next, mix the flat beer with equal parts water to prevent this simple solution from becoming sticky.
Use a mop or dampen a soft cloth, then work the flat beer liquid into the floor. Try to only use a light application and avoid soaking the floor, as too much water can cause more damage.
Then, wipe down the floor, wait a few minutes for it to dry and then use a clean cloth to buff the surface and enhance the shine.
Your wooden floor should be completely clean, polished, and glossy without much effort or the need to buy a pricey wood cleaner.
