Woman's 'disgusting' yet 'satisfying' £1.20 hack for unblocking sinks leaves people amazed

A cleaning enthusiast has shared a cheap £2 trick for unclogging drains, which she described as “disgusting but satisfying”.

It’s a nightmare when the bathroom or kitchen sink starts to drain slowly, with water pooling up and refusing to go down.

Over time, things like hair, dirt and grime can get stuck in the pipes and create big blockages that stop the water from draining properly.

This can cause a nasty smell and can be an expensive problem to fix if left too long, as you might need a plumber.

However, one woman on social media says there’s a simple and cheap solution.

The tip was shared on TikTok by @outgrownourhome, a lifestyle account that often posts useful cleaning advice. The woman has over 119.8k followers, and her drain unblocking tip has been viewed 2.4 million times.

In the video, she shows her bathroom sink not draining quickly, with captions saying: “Time to get this plug hole draining properly.” To solve the problem, she took out the stopper from the drain to get to the plughole more easily.

The video shows clumps of hair and grime causing a blockage inside of the sink.

The social media user said the hack was “disgusting yet satisfying”, and surprisingly, many people agreed with her in the comments. To unclog the drain, she used a special drain unblocking stick to remove the blockage and get the water flowing again.

The long plastic sticks are made to remove blockages and pull hair out of the sink because they have small grippers on the sides.

After doing this a few times, she removed a lot of hair and dirt from the plughole, filling her sink with unpleasant debris.

Next, she cleaned the sink and sprayed it with cleaning products to make sure there was no dirt left. The last step was to put some baking soda and white vinegar in the plughole, followed by hot water from the kettle.

A pack of five drain unblocker sticks can be purchased from Amazon for £5.99, which means each one costs just £1.20. You only need a little bit of baking soda and vinegar, which you can get from Tesco for 65p and 35p respectively.

Alternatively, Dr Oetker bicarbonate of soda can be bought from Co-op for £1.90 and distilled vinegar can be bought from Asda for 29p.

People in the video’s comments agreed that the trick was disgusting but needed to avoid expensive plumber bills.

One person said: “Lifesaver! My sink is like this and I didn’t know how to take out the plug.” Another person admitted: “I start gagging when I’m only doing the dishes.”

Another person suggested: “Another faster way is by going underneath the sink and taking the pipe apart, then pushing your drain snake up through the drain! works every time.”
