Woman told garden is ‘too small’ to renovate proves everyone wrong

A woman has dramatically transformed her outdoor space after initially being told it’s “too small” to qualify as a garden and is, in fact, just a yard. Making the most of any precious outdoor space and turning it into a spot that’s worthy of indulging in is a goal for many people lucky enough to have a patch of land of their own.

Despite the unpredictability of British summers, barbecues, sunbathing, relaxing on a trusty piece of outdoor furniture, playing with pets and children, and much more are all highlights of the season – and are best enjoyed in the garden. Not all homes come with an expansive garden, though.

Imogen Stead was keen to make the most of her outdoor space and wanted to transform it into a relaxing and stylish space to spend time and relax in.

The homeowner is a “DIY renovator”, keen to spruce up her home both inside and out. Her back garden was, originally, a tired space with AstroTurf – a commonly criticised material.

In a video shared on social media, Imogen shared the transformation process, kicking off with removing the faux grass, knocking down a crumbling old shed, and cleaning the brickwork.

Over the top of the footage, she added the words: “Them: that garden is too small, you’ll never make it better.”

This was then replaced with the words: “Me: watch me!”

Imogen added wooden decking, a pergola, potted plants, furniture and more. The end result is a clean, serene and stylish garden.

In the caption accompanying the clip, she penned: “So apparently I’m not allowed to call it a garden because it’s too small, it must be a yard but anyway, with a lot of hard work and a bit of vision, you can turn a small yard/garden into a place you’re proud of (and it looks even better now the plants are really beginning to grow too).”

Meanwhile in the comments section, people decided to share their thoughts. One person said: “Technically (by UK definitions) it’s a yard because it’s paved and walled, whereas a garden has a lawn or planted flower beds.

“That said, the amount of pots, plants, etc, in this yard probably qualifies it as a ‘yarden’!”

Another said: “A yard is a paved or concreted area behind a building, so you had a yard, but you have made it into a beautiful courtyard garden. Well done, enjoy it whatever you want to call it!”

A third commented: “Looks great, I always think plants actually in the ground makes something qualify as a garden but it’s yours, it’s lovely, call it what the hell you want.”

Someone else shared: “It’s a yarden. That’s what I call mine.”

Another person said: “Looks beautiful. We’ve only got a small garden (yard lol) and we have did ours similar with blues!

“Who wants a big garden haha spend all the time keeping it in order and not enough time to chill.”

And another commented: “Looks amazing.”

Someone else added: “It’s a beautiful small garden, well done.”
