A new poll has revealed how many Britons would support the removal of Prince Andrew’s remaining royal titles. In the poll, which was conducted by YouGov last week, 2,295 British adults shared whether they would support the idea of stipping Andrew of his remaining royal titles.
The poll showed that, of the 2,295 who voted, 67 percent would be in support, with 46 percent claiming that they “strongly” feel this way. Just 13 percent openly admitted that they would not support the idea, with an additional 21 percent voting that they “don’t know” how they feel about the idea.
In terms of political affiliations, voters who support the Conservative party showed the lowest percentage of people in support – 60 percent. While Green Party supporters ranked the highest number of those in favour – 79 percent.
Putting those who voted into their age brackets, the high percentage of those in suport of Andrew being stripped of his remaining titles was those 65 and above.
Seventy percent of those aged 65+ said they would support the idea, as opposed to 60 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds.
These poll results come just days after reports that Prince William is planning on stripping his uncle’s titles when he becomes King.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Christopher Wilson, a royal historian and biographer, believes Prince William will take a different approach than his father to criticism, especially when it comes to the scandals surrounding Prince Andrew.
The expert explained: “With William, it will be a different approach – he has hard-nosed ideas about how the Royal Family needs to appear in the frenzied social media world we now inhabit, and I think will be ruthless.”
The royal editor of the news outlet additionally claimed: “Prince William, those around him attest, understands the reputational threat his uncle poses to the monarchy in a new generation and will not shy away from taking action if it needs to fall to him.”
As reported in the Telegraph, “There is a mechanism, the Duke of York may not be pleased to learn, by which Parliament can remove not just a Dukedom but even the title of Prince. It would need legislation, followed by Royal Assent from the King, but it is nevertheless technically possible.”
