A woman was left scratching her head when, after hiring a joiner to install five new shelves in her pantry, she returned home to find something dramatically different – and an eye-watering bill to match. Simple, small home improvements can significantly enhance our homes’ functionality.

Cramped, awkward spaces can be rejuvenated and repurposed, while a more harmonious aesthetic can greatly improve how comfortable we feel at home. Jennifer Payne wanted to improve the layout of her pantry, adding new “micro” shelving to allow her to store and display her spices, as well as five “simple” shelves along the back wall for extra storage.

Instead of receiving what she requested, Jennifer came home to discover a space she described as “a hallway with aspirations” because the revamped layout now looks like a long, narrow corridor without the shelving she asked for – and the carpenter is demanding $17,000 (£12,554.92) for the finished work.

Jennifer was shocked and took to Facebook to share photos of the pantry while seeking advice on how to handle the enormous – and unexpected – bill.

Alongside a series of photos of the space, she wrote: “So apparently, I don’t have a pantry anymore. What I have is… a hallway with aspirations.

“A very expensive hallway. A hallway that thinks it’s chic. A hallway that wants me to host tea parties in the corner like we’re in Alice in Wonderland.”

Jennifer revealed she had requested for her microwave and coffee machine to be on the left of the space, and had wanted “cute little micro spice shelves on the right” and “five simple shelves across the back” adding.

However, what she received were “some weird funhouse corner shelves that scream, ‘Welcome to your hallway tea service, madam'”, and a noticeable absence of spice shelves.

She went on: “And the kicker? A request for $17,000 (£12,554.92) more because apparently, I’m funding someone’s yacht.”

She clarified: “Let me be clear: I did not order ‘Abstract Pantry Hallway: The Museum Installation.’ I ordered five shelves. The exact same ones I had before. For zero additional dollars.”

She wondered whether she should “tell them to rip it out and try again”, or “embrace the fact” she now owns “the world’s most expensive hallway”.

She even made light of the situation by suggesting she might start “serving cucumber sandwiches to strangers for $25 a head to pay off this ‘pantry ransom'”.

Jennifer concluded: “At this point, the only thing being stored here is my rage and Costco-size toilet paper.”

In the comments section, hundreds of people weighed in with their opinions. One person queried: “Where are the plans? Were they approved? If not…they’ve put the wrong pantry in”.

Another commented: “It’s a beautiful space but if it’s not what was agreed upon from mockups or drawings, I wouldn’t let it go.”

One sceptical person shared: “I built my own home and I was there to ok everything. If I saw something not right, I questioned it – I went to my cabinet maker weekly to see everything, gave him pictures out of magazines of what I wanted, so I don’t understand how this was done and you didn’t see it wasn’t right”.

Another queried: “Did you not check what they were doing and at some point tell them that it’s nothing like what you asked for”.

One person was more sympathetic and said: “I love the pantry, but 17,000 extra for what you didn’t ask for is nuts!”

Yet another added: “Looks like a nice pantry”.

In response to the flurry of questions about the pantry’s unexpected transformation, Jennifer confirmed: “We have had many conversations and drawings – nothing like what was installed, and this happened in one day. I can’t even believe it.”
