A woman received the shock of her life while renovating her basement after uncovering a hidden secret within her home.
She removed a grey particle board during the refurbishment and was astonished to discover something concealed behind it. Upon peering behind the board, she found a colourful mural gazing back at her.
She revealed on Reddit: “My house was built in 1926 in Kenmore, Buffalo. We are wondering when it was done, and wanted to share it to see if anyone else has stumbled upon crazy artwork while uncovering walls.”
The painting depicts a man travelling away from a pair on a donkey whilst heading towards a trio of individuals who seem to be chatting.
People were very intrigued by the find and rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts.
Responding to her post, one user suggests it appears as though it “belongs in a Mexican restaurant” since four figures in the image are sporting sombreros.
One user commented: “I used to do home inspections, and I’ve seen many old Buffalo houses where the basements were once used for under-the-table businesses.
“The coolest were three Black-owned hair salons from the ’50s/’60s (so flipping cool – one was totally untouched because the granddaughter inherited the house, and even the magazines were still on the coffee table) but how cool would it be if your basement was a secret under-the-table Mexican restaurant!”.
Another user suggested: “Maybe drop the history museum a message. They might be able to give you some information about the neighbourhood or point you in the right direction.”
One intrigued user commented: “That’s brilliant! Now I want to know what’s behind the mirrors in our basement – installed by a guy who liked to work out down there, three owners ago.”
Another added: “My husband’s grandparents lived in a double on Tacoma in North Buffalo. They had mural-like wallpaper in one room that looked like a forest scene with a little waterfall.”
A final user revealed: “Funny enough, I’ve actually found artwork painted on walls, then covered up by panelling or whatever, in both of the houses I’ve bought/renovated in this area.
“The first one (North Buffalo duplex) had a mural all the way across one living room wall, over the fireplace. It was some sort of Asian landscape scene.
“My current house (single-family) had a painting of some cowboys and Indians scene in the master bedroom.”
