As the days and nights get colder, you may soon find yourself needing a thicker duvet when heading to bed. Especially with winter just right around the corner. And with energy bills only going up, it may be preferable to purchase a thicker duvet than to turn the heating on for any length of time.
With this in mind, Chloe Barrow, an interior expert at Laura James, has delved into weather data from the past five years to reveal the exact date you’ll need to change to a high tog winter duvet. She says, “There has been an average temperature drop of 3.1 degrees Celsius from September to October over the last five years.
“However, we can see that 2024 was the first year since 2020 that October’s average temperature sits at below 12 degrees Celsius. Even if we were to experience this average again in 2025, this isn’t quite cold enough to switch to a winter duvet full-time just yet.
“We should always consider changing to a thicker duvet when we’re experiencing consistent temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or lower, and it’s only when we look at the October to November numbers that we see consistent drops to under ten degrees Celsius consistently over the past nine years.”
Looking at this data, she recommends bringing out the winter duvet on Saturday, 25 October, to ensure a comfortable night’s sleep just before the predicted late October/early November cold snap hits.
Laura notes that if your home has single-glazed windows, you may wish to switch to a winter duvet earlier than her recommended date, as you’ll likely feel the cold temperature earlier than those who have double glazing.
She adds that if your home is well-insulated, you may want to opt for a duvet with a nine or 10.5 tog rating. However, if you need extra warmth and comfort, pick a 13.5 tog instead.
Laura finishes: “If you don’t have central heating in your home, choose a 15 tog as this is the highest tog level that is widely available. Although I have given suggestions here, it’s important to choose what works best for you and allows you to have a good night’s sleep.”
