Windows 10 users finally get good news as useful free upgrade arrives on PCs

Luckily, it seems Windows 10 fans aren’t being completely forgotten about. The team at NordVPN have just announced an update to its Threat Protection service which now offers the ability to automatically scan all installed applications for any bugs or vulnerabilities. Along with working with Windows 11, NordVPN has also confirmed the update is fully compatible with Windows 10 as well meaning those with older machines will also be protected.

If anything sinister is spotted by Threat Protection, both Windows 10 and Windows 11 users will automatically be notified and urged to check for updates that will block any future threats.

“After receiving a vulnerability detection alert about a software security loophole, a user should update the susceptible app immediately,” explained NordVPN. “If there’s no update notification, cybersecurity experts advise to visit the developer’s website and search for the latest version of the app. A user should be wary of possible cyber dangers if the software developer doesn’t offer security patches to fix the vulnerability.”

NordVPN says that its vulnerability detection feature checks around 150 million applications daily and detects vulnerabilities in about 100 thousand applications used by Windows users.

This upgrade is being rolled out for free to anyone who subscribes to NordVPN’s platform.

Explaining more, Vykintas Maknickas, Head of Product Strategy at NordVPN, said: “The vulnerability detection feature automatically checks the applications for known security flaws that hackers may exploit to gain unauthorised access to device and sensitive information. If vulnerability detection identifies an open-to-attack app on a computer, it immediately send user a notification so he can take action to protect data and device.”

If you already subscribe to NordVPN you should find this new service becomes available soon.

Windows 10 end of support, what does it mean for you?

Windows 10 will no longer receive updates from 2025 which means you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 11 to get new features and security updates.

As Microsoft explains, “Once a Microsoft operating system (OS) reaches the end of support, customers will no longer receive technical assistance, software updates, or security fixes.”

“We recommend upgrading to a version of Windows that is still supported,” Microsoft said. “A new device that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and a great experience.”
